Fundraising trip for the Institute of Health Sciences and Technology

September 6th, 2010, Galkayo, Galkayo Medical Foundation (GMF) has announced that it is planning to establish the construction of a Medical Instituion in Galkayo, The Institute is set to educate and create Community Health Workers focusing Nurses, lap technicians, X-ray technicians and health care administrators. The project is intended to develop the Health Sector of Puntland. Studies show that for the last twenty years Somalis have endured violence, displacement, malnutrition, and lack of access to adequate health care. According to World Bank’s Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) findings, the healthcare in Somalia remained one of the world’s poorest situations. Because of this atrocious civil war, all the central government institutions and infrastructures have been collapsed. Although, Puntland State of Somalia was relatively safe in the most part of this period, yet, very few healthcare professionals have returned to Puntland, the massive majority of them have fled to safer countries and the likelihood of their return is not promising. As a direct and natural result from the above episode, there is a severe shortage of physicians and healthcare workers in Puntland. With estimated population of 2.5 million, there are only 72 doctors in Puntland according to Puntland’s Ministry of Health. This disturbing situation has negatively contributed to the current high prevalence of diseases. The Project will require Funds, and GMC is planning to reach out all Donors, Humanitarian Agencies, Puntland Government and Puntland Diaspora in order to allocate sufficient funds for this project.
