How Can I Help

The challenges are great yet the human spirit triumphs in any situation. The Galkayo Medical Center (GMC) has become the defacto General Hospital. The greatest shortage the hospital faces is enough skilled staff and this is the over ridding reason for Dr. Dhegacadde to start working on creating the Puntland Institute of Health science & Technology imperative to create a local college to train people. Some of the more pressing challenges include

Blood Bank

For each patient requiring blood, it is an emergency and the patients might suffer severely, or may lose his/her life if blood is not available.

GMC deals on daily basis with blood transfusion because of accidents, wounds and trauma, manor and major surgeries, anemic patients, during child birth for the mother and many more reasons. Again, the last two wars in Galkayo city on November 29th and December 24th can give a clearer justification for this need.

Most of those fatalities were occurred as a result of blood shortage.   On top of that, about 120 people were wounded in different scale of severity.   About 95% of these victims required different types of surgeries ranging from minor to major. Thusly, blood transfusion was necessary for almost every surgical case.

For procedural practices GMC performs the necessary testing to determine the blood type of patients and to identify compatible blood products for blood transfusions. While this practice is very important and prerequisite to perform this vital action, unfortunately, on the other hand, this have caused as many lives in the past and definitely will cause to us more if we fail to come up with quick solutions.

One obvious solution would be to establish a blood bank for the GMC health care facilities to meet the current challenges on the ground and to safe many lives that will arrive at GMC for critical needs.  GMC have enough land space to build blood bank facility, but will greatly need funds and technical expertise to realize that dignified mission.

Power Generation:

range of specialty services, including wide range of patient surgery and rehabilitation, Reproductive Health care, trauma and many other areas including blood transfusion practices as justified above.  To meet the increasing electrical needs of 6000-square-meter facility, including outpatient department, over 80 inpatient beds, Emergency Room, fully functioning Three Operating Theaters, drug store, Laboratory, and many other services such as administration offices, GMC  is seeking to have two power generators that can provide standby power so as to meet the critical needs of GMC health care operations.
