Galkayo Medical Center

Galkayo Medical Centre (GMC) is a non-profit and non-governmental organization in the health sector based in Galkayo, Puntland, Somalia. GMC has been operating in this area for the last 10 years. Initially, GMC was established in 22nd October 1997 by Cooperation for Medical Services and Development (COMSED) led by Dr. Abdulkadir M Giama an Italian physician, but Somali native.

COMSED is an Italian non-profit, non-governmental organization devoted to the provision of healthy services, education and humanitarian issues. COMSED provided and still continues to provide medical equipments and materials, pharmaceuticals and technical expertise to Galkayo Medical Center GMC.  June 1st 2001, COMSED had to transfer the management of GMC to Galkayo Medical Foundation (GMF) a non government and non for profit local organization.  Ever since, both organizations (GMF and COMSED) have been working very hard to seek and secure funds for GMC health care services for the needy people and war-ravaged country of Somalia.

GMC health care facility consists of an outpatient Clinic and a fully-equipped hospital with over 80 fulltime employees and 15 student volunteers.  Both of the clinic and hospital are situated within a compound of 6000 sq/meters of land.

  • Gynecological and pediatrics visits/consulting
  • Hypertension/Cardiology
  • General surgery
  • Multi-disciplinary ultrasound center
  • Image Diagnosis Radiology

The Hospital wards and centers include:

  • A maternity ward
  • A pediatric ward
  • Center for Gynecological and Obstetric treatment
  • Fistula Referral Center for repair, rehabilitation and reintegration
  • Post-FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) treatment & de-infibulations and counseling centre.

  • Dispensary for essential drugs

GMC Surgical Capacities

GMC has a surgical unit which includes:

Two surgical rooms for routine operations

  • One surgical room for emergencies only
  • One room for pre/post anesthesia
  • One delivery room with Neonatal Reanimation
  • One room for sterilization

Facts:

  • In 2009 GMC have operated 1732 cases
  • GMC is a Referral Hospital for Reproductive Health Care and Fistula Repair for all Somalia
  • GMC is also Referral Hospital for all Puntland population, Central Somalia and Ethiopian Somali region of Ogaden for all the major surgeries and illnesses.
  • GMC provides almost all surgical operation except neurosurgery and thoracic surgery
