Why this project?
There is a sever shortage of physicians and healthcare personnel in Puntland. With 2.4 million population, there are only 72 doctors according to Puntland Ministry Of Health
Health Professionals Stats in Puntland
- 72 Doctors (one doctor for every 35000)
- 478 Qualified Nurses
- 56 Qualified midwives
- 107 Health Technicians
- 295 Community Health Workers
- 650 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA)
Health Shortage are due to many reasons such:
- Many doctors left from Somalia for security and seeking for better life reasons Aging:
- Many doctors have retired or close to retire
- Current crop of doctors from Somalia Medical Schools didn’t receive an appropriate training to face the enormous health challenges
- Authorities have no the necessary capacity to set health and medical regulation & policy
Galkayo Medical Foundation will address the challenges of shortage of Health workers by training local students and Traditional Birth Attendants. Puntland Institute of Health Science & Technology (PIHST)would spear head this effort. PIHST has several objectives that would be accomplished in progressive phase. Details would be available ASAP.
